Col·lectiu Emma - Explaining Catalonia

A Public Reply to The Guardian

Col·lectiu Emma has been commenting reports about Catalonia in the international press in order to contribute to a more balanced description of the situation there. We find your article of November 18 (“Big business gets cold feet as Catalonia's vote for a breakaway hangs in the balance”) rather one-sided. When discussing the economic consequences of a bid for independence, only those that are against seem to be quoted in it. Readers would find a very different point of view, for instance, in the Wilson Initiative website, which has been started by a group of world-renowned Catalan economists. Also, in the way they are presented, some data could be totally misleading. Saying, for instance, that 50% of Catalans do not favour independence and leaving it at that. A very different picture would emerge if one said that around 50% of Catalans do favour independence, less than 30% are against and the rest are undecided. On the other hand, we are looking forward to The Guardian´s upcoming piece about the November 25 election by Jon Henley, which promises to be based on a wider sample of Catalan opinions.
