Separatist is too peaceful a term to apply to rebels
July 21st, 2014

From Mr Xavier Comas Angelet.

Sir, Your editorial “Putin is facing his moment of truth” (July 19) adopts the unfortunate convention of referring to the eastern Ukrainian rebels as “separatists”. I find this denomination myopic and misleading. Clearly, the rebels are not seeking secession as a means to establish a separate and independent country. Rather, they want to leave Ukraine to join Russia. A more accurate term would be “pro-Russian annexationists”.

Using the term “separatists” equates these violent annexationists with peaceful, democratically driven secession movements in other European regions, such as Catalonia or Scotland. All too often media language belies what is really going on. Worse, it confuses motives in situations where clarity is essential to public acceptance or rejection.
