On Monday Catalan president Artur Mas warned the Spanish judicial leadership and magistrates from around the world that "a politicized Justice diminishes the quality of democracy".

During the opening session of the 58th annual meeting of the International Association of Judges (IAJ) --which is being held in Barcelona this year-- and speaking before Carlos Lesmes, President of Spain’s General Council of Judicial Power and the Supreme Court, Rafael Catalá, Spanish Minister of Justice, and Consuelo Madrigal, Spain’s Attorney General, Mas warned that "any partisan use of Justice could diminish its democratic sustenance anywhere in the world".

In a speech in English, French, and Spanish --the three official languages of the meeting (but not Catalan despite it being held in Barcelona)-- the president of the Generalitat referred to Catalonia as "one of the oldest nations in Europe" and "a country" with a long tradition in the world of Law and respect for its institutions.
