Letter to the Editor:

Rafael Arenas García has every right to express his opinion on “Why Catalonia Should Stay With Spain” (Op-Ed, nytimes.com, May 9). Of course, there are many Catalans who have a different opinion, just as not everyone in America was convinced by King George III’s call for unity.

Where do you go from here? Groups in favor of independence say there should be a full public debate and a referendum. Groups against (including the one that Mr. Arenas used to lead), together with the Spanish government, say that a referendum is illegal and that public debate should be restricted.

Earlier this month the president of the Catalan Parliament was in court facing charges for having allowed the elected representatives to debate independence.

Whatever opinion you may have on Catalan independence, the key question now is whether or not you agree that political differences should be resolved through free speech and democracy.

MARK JEFFERY, Barcelona
