Let me first start by saying that your Russian language imposition argument is the lamest argument I have ever read. Are implying that Spain occupied Catalonia? If so, please let us know when and how...please, enlighten us. And be a little more original than that Philip V crap (excuse my French, or shall I say Catalan?). Furthermore, Spain is a full democracy, recognized both by the EU and the UN. Read the Treaties of the EU. If, in your view, Catalonia is not free, might it be for the lack of freedom of its citizens to choose even the language they want to use? Spanish has always (and I repeat, always) been one of the languages of Catalonia since it has existed as a recognized territorial entity. [+]

Gràcies a tots pels vostres comentaris (thank you all for your comments). Toni i Daniel, gràcies pel vostre suport i reflexions To anonymous: 1) There may certainly be a spot of wishful thinking in the sentence that you object to. Our point, however, is that the privileged position of the Spanish language in Catalonia is mainly the result of historical imposition. Please consider the situation in Eastern European countries where Russian had been mandatory for schoolchildren until the fall of the Soviet Union. [+]

1) Do you really believe "few Catalans would object" if they were given the choice to learn English as a 2nd language instead of "having Spanish imposed" on them? Please give me an honest response. It's clear you would not object yourself, but for you to speak on behalf of the Catalan people on this issue seems presumptuous. 2) Why do you assume the FT (and the Economist) correspondent have not been to Barcelona and have not talked to "the other side of the story"? Just because they don't share your view of things? I know The Economist made public a list of Catalans they had interviewed - has FT done anything similar? [+]

A Public Reply to the Financial Times

Tuesday, 28 april 2009 | Financial Times
El prestigiós diari Financial Times va publicar el passat 15 d’abril l’article Spain's 'coffee for all' can be a bitter brew, on presenta una visió esbiaxada de Catalunya. A Public Reply to "The Economist"

Tuesday, 28 april 2009 | The Economist
In a special report published in November 8th, “The Economist” examines the issue of decentralization and the nature of the Spanish “estado de las autonomías” (as the prestigious British newspaper puts it).           In its discussion of Catalan autonomy (in the section “How much is enough?”), the author of the report, Michael Reid, makes a series of assertions about linguistic and education policy, about the financial structure of the Spanish state and about the Spanish constitutional settlement in general which are either imprecise or strictly inaccurate.
